The Fujifilm GFX 50S is the first camera in the company’s new medium format GF series. It uses a 51.4-megapixel mid-format CMOS sensor with a Bayer filter array. Like its X-series sensor sibling, it offers retro styling and comfortable controls in a balanced (if chunky) mirrorless body.
At 43.8×32.9mm, the GFX 50S sensor has a smaller surface area than the medium format film. However, their size and pixel count are identical to those offered by any medium-format digital camera currently on the market (with the exception of the Phase One XF and the Hasselblad H6D). The sensor is 1.7x the area of the entire frame.
The picture quality possibilities are simply amazing: noise is very well controlled, color reproduction is excellent, and the camera produces beautiful Fujifilm colors. There are also several Fujifilm film simulations, so you can have any color style you like. The GFX 50S also makes medium format photography accessible in other ways, as you don’t have to process every raw file to get the most out of it, as the camera produces excellent JPEG images straight from the camera.
