Sony A6300 System Software (Firmware) Update

The Sony A6300 is the company’s newest mid-range mirrorless camera. Like the a6000, it still offers 24MP resolution, but autofocus capabilities, video capabilities, build quality, viewfinder resolution, and price have all been improved. The most exciting change from our point of view is the new sensor on the a6300. While the pixel count remains the same, the a6300 sensor has 425 phase-detection AF points spread across the sensor.

Sensors are also manufactured using a newer manufacturing process that uses copper wires to help improve sensor performance and possibly help increase camera battery life a bit. Like the previous 6-series E-mount cameras, the a6300 has a 16:9 flip-up/down ratio display. The shape of the display indicates the intended use of the 6300: video recording as well as still images.

The cinematic characteristics of the a6300 have been significantly improved. It doesn’t just shoot 4K (UHD) at 24p or 25p from the full width of the sensor (or 30p from a tighter crop). You also benefit from a microphone jack, a video-focused image profiling system (including S-Log2 and S-Log3 flat gamma curves), and the ability to record timecodes.
