Sony A9 System Software (Firmware) Update

The Sony A9 is the company’s first camera aimed at professional wedding, action, and sports photographers. It is a 24-megapixel full-frame mirrorless camera that can shoot at 20fps with full autofocus. And, just as importantly, with extremely low viewfinder lag and absolutely no power outages during continuous shooting.

That’s right, a mirrorless camera aimed at a wedding, action, and sports photographer: strikes at a DSLR’s greatest strength area. It’s true that Olympus has moved in this direction with the E-M1 Mark II, but Sony promises lightning-fast readability and full-frame image quality, backed by the expansion of the Pro Support program that will be required for entry into the professional market it’s a bit ambitious.

All of this capability comes from the stacked CMOS image sensor, which includes near-pixel processing circuitry and the ability of the onboard memory to send all this data to an external processor at a speed it can handle. It is this structure that allows the camera to shoot at 20 frames per second and do so with an electronic shutter fast enough to minimize the effects of shutter movement. The fast readout also enables 60 AF/AE calculations per second, promising better subject tracking and prediction. Sony ILCE-9 System Software Update
